What a journey this football club has been on. Only eight years on from its Wrexham area League history Bala Town staged its first ever live televised match. Our fears of a vastly reduced attendance when we were told that we had to play our most lucrative league fixture, against Bangor ,on an August Saturday afternoon proved unfounded as over 700 packed into Maes Tegid. What they witnessed was worthy of a television drama. Many Bangor fans conceded that a draw would have been a fair result , few from Bala would concede that anything other than a home win would have been just. Almost a classic at Bala on a cold and damp afternoon. Bangor’s class ( and extensive budget )was evidenced by the quality of their subs bench, Jamie Reed, Les Davies and Eddie Jebb would be starters at every club other than Neath and TNS. But it was Bala who took a sixth minute lead when Chris Mason timed a perfect run in to the near post to head home John Irving's right wing cross. It was a great start and would have been of more value if we had not ended Craig Garside's run into the box with a poor challenge from Mark Powell for a penalty. Dave Morley is a dead eyed spot specialist and easily netted an eighth minute equaliser. Bangor were now pushing Bala back, with Sion Edwards proving hard to handle. His cross of a slippy wet ball was squeezed up by Craig Vernon and flew to the predatory Chris Jones who headed home from close range in only the 11th minute. If the TV viewers had not enjoyed what they were seeing then they were very hard to please. Bala fought back, firstly with a corner which Jellicoe headed powerfully but too close to Paul Smith then Mark Jones latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box but Smith saved again. Bala suffered a major setback on the half hour when the excellent Mason pulled up with a hamstring injury and had to be replaced. It was all Bala with Williams and Jones in complete control of midfield Ross Jefferies had a great chance to level but put his chip too low and l Smith at full stretch just palmed away. Next Michael Thompson ran down the left and his low cross found Ross Jefferies who might have done better from eight yards. Then John Irving crossed from the right but Jefferies' effort was blocked by Johnston. A goal simply had to come and on 36 minutes it did, but at the wrong end. After all the Bala pressure a long kick from Smith was headed on by Morley and Alan Bull ran in to finish from the left. A poor goal. Four minutes before the interval Michael Thomson ran in on goal but Roberts nipped in to make a last ditch tackle. The half ended with Bala wondering just how they were 3-1 down. HALF TIME 1-3 Bala came out hungry for the second half and upped the tempo. It paid off with an excellent 50th minute goal. Mark Jones led a breakaway down the right and fed John Irving who beat two defenders and passed low to the back post to substitute Neil Fisher who slotted home. Bala pressed for an equaliser and Thompson sent a left footer curling just wide from 25 yards. Little was seen of Bangor but Brewerton and Johnson held firm under pressure for the Citizens. On the break Bull won a corner but Craig Vernon claimed the high ball and the pressure evaporated. Mark Jones shot wide from the edge of the box on the hour. Bangor were struggling to get much possession at this stage and it was no surprise when they made a double change with Davies and Reed replacing Morley and Edwards. We continued to upset the blues defence, Michael Thompson shooting over. Smith had to be alert when Mark Jones' superb 25 yard free kick looked destined for the top corner, but at full stretch the keeper punched it away for a corner. Bangor had a rare chance in the 85th minute when Roberts’s long throw was headed by Davies for Reed to flick wide. For the second week running Bala were denied a spot kick on 86 minutes when Mark Jones ran into the box, fell under a late challenge from Hoy, but referee Parry had seen nothing to merit a penalty, perhaps a better class of fall might have brought justice. Time ran out on Bala but Ross Jefferies might have levelled things when he fired at Smith two minutes into added time; however the flag was up for offside. Match Photos can now be viewed on Evan L.
