The previous fixture between the two teams a few weeks back ended in a draw, so with this being the last game before the winter break, both teams would have wanted to go into the layoff with a good performance under their belt.

Todays Bala team was possibly an insight to how next years under 16‘s might look with only one member of the squad (Dan Jones, keeper) being in the older age group, with our other members either away on trials for their league representative team or injured.

Right from the start Bala pressurised Connahs Quay and were playing some nice passing football.

With a growing confidence in each others game Bala carved out a couple of decent chances. Tom Mayers being unlucky on two occasions, so it was very much against the run of play when due to a mix up in defence, a Quay player managed to steal the ball and score.

After the restart the game again saw Bala doing well with Alex Webster and Robert John battling for every ball in midfield but it was Quay who were to add to their tally with a ball coming in across the goal mouth to be knocked in at close range by the Quay striker.

Bala again carried on pressing and were rewarded for their efforts when left back Joe Hughes decided to go on a run up the pitch. After passing two players Joe found himself in the last third of the pitch were he played a great ball across to Tom Mayers who controlled the ball and scored with a nice finish -
2-1.

Both teams had their chances before half time. Quay hitting the post, Dan Jones making a brilliant save from what seemed like a certain goal and Luke Humphreys having a nice curling shot well saved by Quays keeper.

The second half saw Quay starting the brighter of the two teams and from the resulting pressure got themselves a corner from which they were to get their third goal - 3-1.

The lads again showed great character from the restart and never once let their heads drop and carried on playing their own game.

One move gained Bala a corner. From the resulting kick Quay failed to clear the ball and after two or three attempts at goal the ball finally fell to Cai Roberts who somehow found a gap through crowd in the box to score. 3-2.

With Bala pushing for the equaliser and the game becoming more stretched, Quay had one or two chances of their own but due to some impressive defending from the back four. These chances were snubbed out.

In one Bala attack Robert John won the ball in central midfield and played a great through ball for Tom Mayers who slotted the ball expertly under the keeper for the equaliser - 3-3.

Neither team at this point seemed happy to go away with the draw and Quay once again took their chance when their player just beat Dan to a bouncing ball which he then looped over Dan into the net. 4-3.

With the final whistle fast approaching Bala pushed for another equalizer. Matty Evans, Joe and Luke all going close, but this time it just wasn’t to be.

Final score Bala Town 3-4 Connahs Quay.
