Manager uses latest pre-season friendly to try out further squad combinations

On a balmy Tuesday summer´s evening Bala Town travelled to Prescot on the outskirts of Liverpool to take on Prescot Cables in their latest pre-season friendly. The 20 or so Bala fans who made the trip witnessed another permutation of the squad as manager, Colin Caton rotated squad members in this latest friendly.

Valerie Park is a ´proper´ old-fashioned football ground and Cables were themselves fielding a mainly new young squad which even the home announcer failed to recognise owing to a lack of team sheet!! Another item of note to us visiting fans was the length of grass on the pitch - quite long to say the least! However, nothing could detract from the welcome we received from our hosts and that was absolutely first class and for that we would like to thank them most sincerely.

The first half kicked off and Bala were nearly in front in the first few seconds when a Cables defender narrowly put a glancing header past his own post. Both teams in the first half were pretty evenly matched with the Cables no. 7 in midfield catching the eye with some telling touches. However chances were few and far between and half-time arrived with the score at 0-0.

Bala made 5 changes at half time and after a couple of half chances for Bala by Owain Roberts and John Irving, Cables took the lead just after the hour when a cross from the left was eventually scrambled home by Danny Murphy after Bala had failed to clear their lines. However, Cables seemed to sit deep after taking their lead and this gave the impetus back to Bala and that eventually told when we equalised on 85 minutes, Liam Loughlin rifling the ball into the net from 8 yards.

Cables then made a last ditch attempt at getting a winner with a cross towards McCormick which he punched out to safety after which the referee blew for full time.

A fair performance as both teams seemed to be adjusting to new players finding their place in their respective teams. For Bala, this was perhaps the hardest game up to now of their pre-season so far. We now look forward to the away games at Porthmadog and Denbigh in the next 6 days and then to the home matches against Rhyl and Witton Albion. Bring them on!!!
