Bala reached the dizzy heights of being top of the Welsh Premier League with an excellent 2-0 away victory last Saturday in Newtown.

The visitors began well with Mark Jones making an early run into the box only to see him tripped if full flight. The referee chose not to award a spot kick.

Chris Mason then had 2 half chances but was thwarted by a fine save and his own miskick. Bala’s defence were then found lacking and Terry McCormick made 2 fine saves from a free header and a deflected shot.

The best chance of the half fell to Chris Mason (pictured) after a superb Mark Jones through ball who shot wide of the target. Bala were now dominating possession but could not break through.

In first half injury time Chris Mason again was put through only to see his fierce shot well saved by the home keeper.

It was scoreless at the interval and the first 10 minutes of the second period saw little in the way of goal efforts. Newtown then exerted a period of pressure on the Bala defence but with Suart Jones in superb form there was no end result for the home side.

On 75 minutes Bala forced their way behind the home defence but a weak attempt by Peter Doran saw the keeper save easily.

Bala then brought on the livewire Stephen Brown and the constant pressure finally paid off in the 81st minute. An excellent run down the left by the creative Mark Jones saw Stephen Brown on the end of his fierce cross and he sidefooted home for the opening goal.

Lee Hunt then came on for his first appearance after injury to the delight of the travelling fans.

On 85 minutes Stuart Jones headed inches wide but the points were wrapped up on 89 minutes when another excellent Mark Jones run saw his pass find Chris Mason whose superb strike from the edge of the area found the bottom corner of the net.

This was a brilliant victory from a team full of confidence, but Aberystwyth away next Saturday will provide a much sterner test if the opening unbeaten run is to continue.
