|The New Saints||3|
It wasn’t the Lakesiders’ day infront of the Sgorio cameras as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat against the reigning League Champions.
Andrai Jones, Anthony Stephens and Ian Sheridan came into the side that won against Newtown on the opening night of the season instead of Davies, Hayes and Stuart Jones.
As normally the case, The Saints were bright out of the blocks with their pressing attacking play forcing the Lakesiders to work hard from the outset.
Fletcher had the best chance for the home side in the opening quarter of an hour when he flicked across wide of the upright meanwhile Town were forced into a goalline block from Lee Owens as they cranked up their pressure.
Town could’ve opened the scoring when good work in midfield allowed Venables to put in a fantastic delivery towards the backpost but Bala couldn’t capitalise on the effort.
Evan Horwood drove an effort from range over the crossbar before the interval in a half that was quite uneventful for both sides but a pleasing defensive performance by the Lakesiders.
A chance fell to Burke at the restart but his chance went wide of the post followed by Jordan Evans’ low strike fizzing past the upright from 25 yards.
However, the home side broke the deadlock after 57 minutes of play when Robbie Parry’s corner kick arrived to an unmarked Blaine Hudson headed into the left hand corner.
Then it was 2-0 on 63 minutes when Fletcher burst into the area and smashed the ball into the net from close range.
A triple sub saw Davies, Hayes and Bell take the places of A Jones, Evans and Stephens with both Jordan and Anthony being forced off due to injury.
After 72 minutes, the Saints added their third of the evening when Fletcher impressively looped the ball from the edge of the box into the far corner after seeing Morris off his line.
A few half chances for Town followed, a freekick from Venables was deflected for a corner, Hayes and Burke combined but Harrison was able to gather and a cracking ball came to Hayes unmarked but he wasn’t able to side foot the ball goalwards and the effort went begging.
Not the best of afternoons for the Lakesiders who had a tough day at the office. Focus now turns to next week’s game v Cardiff Met. Don’t miss it!
