It’s Derby Day in Gwynedd!

The Lakesiders are on their travels tonight, as Caernarfon Town host the Lakesiders in the first edition of the Gwynedd Derby this season! Following a fine 3-1 win against Newtown AFC last Friday night (27/11/2020) the Lakesiders head into this game on an 8 game unbeaten run, having not lost since the start of October, after a shocking 2-1 defeat to promoted side Haverfordwest County.

There’s definitely no love lost between the two clubs tonight, as Caernarfon Town play host to the Lakesiders! The hosts have had a rough start to the season after only picking up 11 points out of 11 games, while also conceding 23 goals, which is the 3rd most conceded goals in the league so far. Former Town goalkeeper Josh Tibbets has conceded 5 more goals compared to this stage last season for the Lakesiders, and there’s still 11 games to go of Phase 1 in the Cymru Premier, however also former Bala Town forward Mike Hayes has scored 4 of the 15 goals scored by the Cofi’s so far this season.  The Cofi’s 11 points have come from 3 wins and 2 draws, while also falling to defeat 6 times, and currently sit in 8th place, with it looking very crowded in the bottom half of the table, with only a 4 point gap between 6th and 11th place! Caernarfon’s previous fixture saw them host Haverfordwest County AFC at the Oval, and despite seeing an early red card to goalkeeper Josh Tibbets, they still took the lead in the 24th minute, however their lead did not last long, as Haverfordwest hit back just 5 minutes later. It didn’t take long for the visitors to make the most of the red card, as just 7 minutes after equalising, the visitors took the lead. Haverfordwest finished the Cofi’s off in the second half with two more goals to hand the home side a 4-1 defeat, and to make matters worse, Tibbets will now be suspended for the match tonight against his former side.

The previous meeting between the Gwynedd Rivals saw the Lakesiders snatch a late goal to bring all 3 points back to Maes Tegid 10 months ago! Despite the Lakesiders being handed an early penalty in the game, the score stayed 0-0 after Chris Venables blazed his shot over the bar. The breakthrough came on 33 minutes, and it was the home side who took the lead, as Noah Edwards drilled his shot into the bottom left corner from 17 yards out to give the Cofi’s the lead. It took over an hour of the game for the Lakesiders to get their first goal, as Venables made up for his penalty miss earlier in the game and slotted home after a perfectly weighted ball from Leslie, to level the game! The Lakesiders then went on the hunt for a winner, with pressure being applied to the Cofi’s defence, and the pressure payed off, as Venables sealed the win with 10 minutes to play, as a pin point ball from Mendes into the path of the Captain, who headed home from 6 yeards out.

Therefore tonight’s game is all set to be a cracker, with the possibility of the Lakesiders facing up against former forward in Mike Hayes, and with the possibility of the Lakesiders’ old but new signing in Gary Roberts earning his second full debut. The Lakesiders will want to keep up the chase with the leading pack in Connah’s Quay Nomads and The New Saints, with TNS still leading the way, with an 8 points gap over the Lakesiders despite the Town having a game in hand. Caernarfon Town will surely look to climb up the table and hope to take any points they can from their Gwynedd rivals, despite not taking any points off the Lakesiders in their last 4 meetins, although anything can happen!
