Defeat for Lakesiders but a very promising display!
There was midweek action for Town on Tuesday as they welcomed National League North side Southport to Maes Tegid.
Our opponents started very well and has an impressive first half performance. Bala’s trialist goalkeeper was called into action early on and made a solid save.
Southport took the lead after 20 minutes of play. A break down the right saw a ball delivered into the box which Brad Bauress duly dispatched from around 10 yards which went in off the base of the post.
The football by Southport was quick and their resilient backline was standing firm, keeping Venables and Jones quiet upfront.
However, the second half was much better by Bala and probably a half of football that should’ve seen them earn something from the game.
Substitute Kieran Smith saw his low drive palmed away by the keeper only two minutes into the half before a break through Molyneux was crossed into the area but the defence could clear.
Down the other end a long range shot by Southport curled comfortably over the crossbar prior to a quick passage of play being cleared by Spittle.
Molyneux and Burns linked up on the right with a cracking cross put into the area but the visitors cleaned their lines.
Bala were growing in strength and were dominant during the final ten minutes with plenty of possession and causing problems.
Kieran Smith got on the end of a brilliant cross but Hanford made an excellent save to deny him of an equaliser.
Bala should’ve been level five minutes from time when they move of the match when Molyneux’s deceiving cross was pushed away by Hanford before the rebound was hacked off the line.
A very useful evening for the Lakesiders against difficult opposition but plenty of positives going into Saturday’s game against Accrington Stanley.
Many thanks to Southport for visiting us – good luck for the forthcoming season.
