Penalty kick seperates the Lakesiders and Robins.
Town saw an early exit from the Nathaniel MG League Cup on Tuesday evening with a Jamie Reed second half penalty knocking Town out of the competition.
Bala started bright enough and could’ve taken an early lead when a delivery from Ian Sheridan arrived to Andrai Jones but he headed the ball wide from 5 yards after 3 minutes of play.
Hayes went close when he headed wide of the upright and putting his chance in the side netting before Glenn Rule saw a shot palmed away by Jones.
Newtown had a good chance themselves when Kershaw’s ball arrived to Reed but Stuart Jones was able to clear the danger.
Plenty of the play was being battled in the middle third of the pitch with the game quite evenly balanced.
Venables headed wide, Sheridan’s strike from close range blazed over for the Lakesiders meanwhile down the other end Mitchell saw his shot turned around the post and Mills-Evans glanced wide of the upright from Williams’ ball minutes before halftime.
The second half again saw Bala have an early opportunity to take the lead, Hayes curled in a superb ball from the left towards Sheridan who only needed to head the ball in but it went begging over the crossbar.
With 59 minutes on the clock, Stuart Jones brought down Reed in the box for referee Iwan Griffith to point to the spot. Up stepped Reed and blasted the ball into the right hand side giving the Robins the lead.
Kershaw let rip from 25 yards that saw Morris make an impressive save to tip over the spectacular dipping effort.
Bala were trying to mount some pressure as they looked for an equaliser but weren’t able to create anything clear cut apart from a cracking throughball from Evans releasing Venables but Jones was able to keep the resulting low shot at bay.
Town’s cup run comes to a premature end at the first hurdle. It’s 10 days off for the Lakesiders due to the international break and back in action on September 8th away at Connah’s Quay.
