Town’s Europa League campaign came to an end on Thursday evening following a 3-0 defeat out in Liechtenstein.
The result suggest a heavy defeat for the Lakesiders but the scoreline didn’t reflect the tie that saw contreversial decisions awarded in the first half.
The first 20 minutes were heartening for the Town who looked bright in the early stages.
Davies, Smith and Sheridan linked up well but the chance led to nothing but Town were working hard defensively with Owens and Venables clearing half chances for the home side.
Slowly though, Vaduz were coming into the game and after initially testing with a long range effort dipping over the bar, took the lead after 22 minutes. The winger beat the offside trap and squared the ball towards Turkes who slotted home.
They almost doubled their lead 2 minutes later when an 18 yard strike was pulled narrowly wide of the upright.
Vaduz took a hold of the game but weren’t testing Morris as such but doubled their lead on 39 minutes. A bad spell of defending saw the backline carved open for Turkes to put the ball in an empty net.
The game took a turn for the contreversial following a substitution that saw Bell come on for Stuart Jones who had pulled his hamstring. Bell was entering the field of play but Vaduz continued with the play which caught the Town squad totally unprepared as they awaited the substitution which saw Marco Mathys walk through the half and put the ball in the net.
The second half was a non-event with not many significant chances for either side.
Town could’ve got a goal back following superb work by Thompson, he found Smith who squared to Wade, he broke forward with Burke free on the flank in support but the ball ran out of play.
A freekick by Thompson was cleared by Vaduz meanwhile down the other end, the home side put a free header wide of the post.
Kieran Smith curled a goalbound strike towards the far post but it was brilliantly palmed away by Jehle.
In added time, Vaduz broke free to go one-on-one with Morris but he got down low quickly and saved superbly with his feet and bringing our Europa League campaign to an end.
Thank you for all your support over the European campaign and best wishes to Vaduz in the next round.
